this is legitimate question, i’m not trying to be sassy

Why is it that a cosplayer darkening her complexion with makeup (to play a darker-skinned character) is a really big taboo, but nobody seems to have a problem when a cosplayer lightens her complexion (to play a lighter-skinned character)?  Isn’t that a double-standard?  I’m not trying to make a point here, I just honestly want to know why.
